TEHACHAPI, Calif.— The Friends of the Tehachapi Depot and the City of Tehachapi will commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Tehachapi Depot Museum in early June. The replica structure was built shortly after the destruction of the original station by a fire in 2008.

“We are thrilled to honor this milestone for the Tehachapi Depot Museum and the immense dedication of the Friends of the Depot, who work tirelessly to preserve and share our City’s railroad history with residents and tourists,” said City Manager Greg Garrett in a press release.

Prior to the celebration, Tehachapi will be designated as “Train Town USA,” a program by the Union Pacific Railroad that has recognized more than 130 communities along it system. The main line through town is home to the Union Pacific with BNSF Railway operating via trackage rights. The designation ceremony is scheduled for June 5, and will feature a main presentation by UP Representative Peggy Ygbuhay, speeches from dignitaries and city representatives, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Loop Mural in Railroad Park that was recreated by Make Art Tehachapi.

The anniversary celebration is set for June 7. Event highlights will include signal demonstrations on the hour, presentations in the freight room, a model railroad layout by Sky High Trains, vendors, and more.

  1. Note that the original railroad depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 20, 1999. Although the original depot no longer exists, it remains on the National Register.

  2. Many a U.S. business would do well to learn the Union Pacific model for community relations.

    1. Railfans should also not miss the fantastic Union Pacific Railroad Museum located in downtown Council Bluffs, Iowa!
