CALGARY — ATCO Group will build two hydrogen production and refueling facilities for Canadian Pacific’s program developing hydrogen fuel-cell locomotives, ATCO announced. The facilities in Calgary and Edmonton will each include a 1 megawatt electrolyzer, compression, storage, and fuel dispensing. The Calgary facility will be powered in part by a solar power facility at CP’s headquarters.

“We’re thrilled to be working with CP to advance hydrogen in yet another energy application, in this case for use as a commercial transportation fuel,” ATCO’s Bob Myles, executive vice president, corporate development, said in a press release. “For 75 years, we’ve been providing customers and communities with safe and reliable essential services, and we ensure that same dependability and agility is built into energy transition solutions as we journey to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for all.”

Construction is scheduled to begin later this year with the facilities in operation in 2023.

CP unveiled its first of three planned hydrogen fuel-cell locomotives earlier this year, expanding the program from its original plans from one unit with the help of funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta [see “CP to build additional hydrogen locomotives …,” Trains News Wire, Nov. 1, 2021]. CEO Keith Creel has said the railroad expects the first unit to be operating this year.
