The Stourbridge Line logoThe Stourbridge Line runs on 25 miles of the ex-Erie Lackawanna Railroad between Honesdale and Lackawaxen. In addition to the breathtaking scenery, the territory is rich in history, with its roots based on coal hauling on a “gravity” railroad. It’s home to the Stourbridge Lion, the first commercial locomotive in the U.S. The engine was manufactured in Stourbridge, England, circa 1829 with a lion’s face painted on the front. The current operations exist as the Delaware, Lackawaxen & Stourbridge Railroad, offering year-round tourist train service. The trains are powered by an EMD BL2, ex-Bangor & Aroostook No. 54.

Choices

A variety of excursions, seasonal and themed events, and dining experiences are offered. All trains operate with a combination of open-window coaches and table cars. There are two locations to board, downtown Honesdale or Hawley.

When to go

This is a year-round operation. Perhaps the most popular time to visit is fall when the leaves begin to change colors during foliage season. There are day and night operations, based on sightseeing and dining events, geared to riders of all ages.

Good to know

A majority of the Stourbridge Line route isn’t accessible by car, so you get a unique rail experience. The tracks closely follow the Lackawaxen River. Plan to enjoy the scenic drive to the railroad. There are plenty of services and eateries along this route. Look to nearby Scranton for a better selection of lodging options.

Worth doing

Look for Antler Ridge Winery in Honesdale. Heading south/east out of town, Delaware & Hudson Canal Park at Lock 31, Lake Wallenpaupack Dam, Rock Cut Farm Swinging Bridge & Shimers Rock Cut in Hawley, Franklin Memorial Wall in Lackawaxen. In Scranton, you will see Steamtown National Historic Site.

Don’t miss

In Honesdale, a replica of the Stourbridge Lion is on display at the Wayne County Historical Society.

Getting there

Honesdale is northeast of Scranton. Follow U.S. Route 6 to access either end of the line.
