2017 Grand prize winner: I have been a Manhattanite for decades therefore I abhor leaving my island and crossing water. But I will for the No. 7. Opened in 1915, this 22-station New York City subway line carries more than 800,000 daily riders on its mostly elevated route. With a little Lucky 7 luck, I bagged these two 11-car trains of R62A cars passing each other in Hunterspoint, Queens. The train on the right started at 34th Street-Hudson Yards on the west side of Manhattan, went through the Steinway Tunnels under the East River, and has just emerged from underground, and now begins its roller-coaster elevated ride halfway to the Nassau County line to terminate in Flushing. The train on the left is heading west into Manhattan.

We are excited to announce that Sigma will be cosponsoring the 2018 contest, which is all about you, where you live or, perhaps, where you grew up. We are calling the 2018 photo contest “My Hometown Railroad.” Be prepared to explain how your photo suits our theme should we select it. Please submit no more than three images. Do not alter your images beyond minor color corrections, burning, dodging, and levels adjustments.
