Logo for Amtrak Pacific SurlfinerORANGE, Calif. — Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner is adding a carry-on pet program beginning May 20, expanding the locations where the passenger operator allows passengers to bring along small dogs and cats.

Dogs and cats weighing up to 20 pounds may be brought aboard in a carrier which should remain under the passenger’s seat. There is a fee of $26 or 800 Amtrak Guest Rewards points, a limited number of pet reservations are available per train, and each customer is limited to one reservation per trip.

“We’re always looking for ways to better serve the needs of our passengers, and allowing pets to come along for the ride is something our customers have expressed a strong interest in,” Jason Jewell, interim managing director of the LOSSAN Agency, which manages Surfliner operations, said in a press release. “This pet program will provide more options for our customers in a way that will be safe and convenient, and we’re thrilled to introduce it ahead of the summer travel season.”
