NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – R.J. Corman Railroad Co., has reached an agreement to purchase a 43-mile branch line and lease another 20-mile branch in North Carolina from Norfolk Southern. This will be the 19th railroad operated by Corman. The sale is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

The newly created Raleigh & Fayetteville Railroad, LLC (RFCC) will operate between Raleigh and Fayetteville, N.C., on an original Norfolk Southern Railway line. The original NS was merged into Southern Railway in 1974. Commodities carried range from chemicals, metals, and construction materials to forest, consumer, and agricultural products. The wholly owned subsidiary of R.J. Corman Railroad will interchange with NS in Raleigh and both CSX Transportation and the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad in Fayetteville. Corman said it expects to take over operations in December 2022.

“With this acquisition, we will expand our footprint in the Carolinas, a market where the company has been highly successful. R.J. Corman is committed to top-of-the-line customer service, and we are eager to replicate this experience for future business partners in the area,” R.J. Corman Railroad Group President and CEO Ed Quinn said in a news release.

R.J. Corman Railroad Group is a privately owned holding company that operates short line railroads, provides railroad construction services, railroad emergency response services, signaling, track materials and warehousing. It was founded in 1973 by the late R.J. “Rick” Corman.
