Harvey Fire Department Chief Jerrard Swan said firefighters were informed of the accident about 5 a.m., and that 10 cars were involved. Only one was loaded; that car, carrying lime, was leaking, but the material is not toxic.

No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

Harvey Station is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Fredericton.

The New Brunswick Southern is one of three J.D. Irving, Ltd., short lines in New Brunswick and Maine. It runs for about 212 kilometers (131.7 miles) between Saint John and the U.S. border, where another Irving railroad, the Eastern Maine Railway, continues to Brownsville Junction, Maine. The route provides a connection for Canadian Pacific to the port of Saint John.
