MONTREAL — The Canadian government will fund a C$16.75 million project to improve rail access and add storage at the Port of Montreal, Transportation Minister Pablo Rodriguez announced Monday, March 25.
The project will include rehabilitation of, and adding a fourth track to, the Pie-IX rail bridge, along with adding a storage area, which Transport Canada said will boost the port’s commercial value by more than $1 billion annually.
“The support of the federal government enables us to consolidate the intermodal platform that is the Port of Montreal, and to strengthen the resilience and rail connectivity of our facilities, to the benefit of all our users,” port CEO Julie Gascon said in a press release. “This effort is in addition to those already undertaken by our teams and partners to optimize the rail network.”
The Montreal Gazette reports the project will support expansion of Lantic Sugar, which has a factory in the port area and recently announced it would invest C$200 million to increase its production by 20%.
Funding for the project comes from the National Trade Corridors Fund.
The port is served by both Canadian National and CPKC.
