DUBUQUE, Iowa – Canadian Pacific has received its first group of rebuilt SD70ACU locomotives from Progress Rail. CP Nos. 7000-7003 were picked up in Paducah, Ky., by Canadian National last week and delivered to CP in Dubuque on Aug. 15. Canadian Pacific train 575-116 picked up the units for forwarding to Canada on Aug. 18. The four locomotives will be set out in Calgary for setup and begin revenue service by testing in western Canada initially.

The locomotives are part of an initial 30-unit order for SD70ACUs, utilizing CPs long-stored fleet of SD9043MACs as cores for the project. A follow-up order was placed for 30 more SD70ACUs for delivery in 2020. This order will use CP’s remaining 28 stored SD9043MACs and two SD9043MACs purchased from Union Pacific. Union Pacific Nos. 3551 and 3567 were shipped from a Union Pacific deadline in Nampa, Idaho, to St. Paul, Minn.

Progress Rail is completing the rebuilds at its Mayfield, Ky., facility. Road numbers for the two orders will be CP Nos. 7000-7059.

  1. These badboys deliver a whopping 4500HP so hopefully they pull their share. NS seems to like their SD70ACU’s.

  2. BTW, These CP SD70ACU’s kinda look like the old 4 CP SD90MAC-H units to me, but I know that their not.

  3. Really nice. I like these CP SD70ACU’s although I will miss the original SD9043MAC design and look that they once had.
