Norfolk Southern No. 4271 leads the three other F units at Knoxville, Tenn., in November 2011. Reading & Northern has acquired two and will debut them on a railfan excursion in April 2020.

PORT CLINTON, Pa. – The public will have its first opportunity to ride behind Reading & Northern’s recently acquired former Norfolk Southern F unit locomotives on April 18.

The 230-mile round-trip excursion from Reading Outer Station in Muhlenberg Township to Pittston and return will be the first public appearance for F9 No. 270 and F7B No. 275, which will carry a new Reading & Northern paint scheme. The ride will also be the first public trip to cross the railroad’s new bridge at Jim Thorpe Junction, a project that connects the railroad’s Reading and Lehigh divisions.

Tickets are on sale for the all-day excursion, with standard coach seating at $99, premium seating $110, open-air car seating for $125, and “observation dome car seating” aboard R&N’s former Milwaukee Road full-length dome for $150. Snacks and light lunch will be available in two cafe cars in the train’s consist. For more information and reservations, go to www.rbmnrr.com or call 610-562-2102.

The 12-hour ride, with two photo runbys planned, is billed as a “Railfan Excursion,” and the trip announcement includes the advisory: “If you are not a hard core railfan – this may not be an excursion for you!”

  1. Martin – Allentown (Allentown – Bethlehem – Easton) or Harrisburg are both fairly close, but I would do Phila. It’s easily the cheapest.

  2. With this and the headline “Reading & Northern reports record growth in 2019” the RBMN is hands down the best managed railroad in the country.
