In this exclusive Trains.com series, you can follow Gerry as he works through efforts to plan, frame, and build-out an all-new Bona Vista Railroad in HO scale!

  1. This was a great way to start the series on building a new layout from scratch. I think too many people begin the layout design and building process without giving much thought to what they want their layout to be in their modeling life. Is it operations, train watching, model building, all of the above or none of these things? Sadly, getting started without some concept of the final result (even though that might be some years away, or never) many times results in disappointment. Glad to see that you discussing these topics early in the process Gerry.

    1. Thanks, Gus. You can’t aim your arrow until you know where the target is. Otherwise you’re just shooting into thin air hoping to hit something. Considering you’ll spend YEARS building the layout, it’s silly not to spend a few days or weeks thinking about what you want as an end result!

  2. Gerry
Finally found the start of your new series. Looks like your all set for another great adventure.
I make up the increased grades by running shorter trains with double up front end power. Would have been nice to have 1% grades but space limits called for 3%-4%.

  3. Well thought out video! I really enjoyed how Gerry switches from location to location, and from one time until the next. While I enjoy all the MRVP staff, Gerry is my favorite. Gerry and the production staff deserve an award for this video. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

  4. This is a great series. I too am starting a new layout in a new state. I always enjoy Gerry’s presentations.
