STRASBURG, Pa. — Railroad photographer, author, and Trains columnist Brian Solomon will lead a photo session at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, March 10. The program — Railroad Photography: The Steam Locomotive — runs from 9 to 11 a.m.

Using the museum’s unique collection of historic steam locomotives, built between the 1830s and 1960s, Solomon will guide participants through the best ways to capture the most intricate details found on steam engines. The program will offer opportunities to photograph smaller yard switchers to larger mainline freight and passenger locomotives. During the session, Solomon will discuss how steam locomotives operated, their various components, importance in railroad history, and why they are so fascinating.
Participants are encouraged to bring any type of camera — digital or film, smart phone or advanced setup. The program will focus on composition and technique with regard to historic steam locomotives.
Solomon holds a degree in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He produces a daily blog about railroad photography and has published numerous articles and photos in railway magazines including Trains Magazine, Railway Age, Railroad Explorer, Railfan & Railroad, National Railroad Historical Society Bulletin, Germany’s Modelleisenbahner, the Journal of the Irish Railway Record Society and the UK’s Rail Magazine. Solomon has authored more than 70 books. He is the marketing manager for New Hampshire’s Conway Scenic Railroad.
