When Erie Mining F units ruled the Iron Range
In fall 1991, an A-B-B set of Erie Mining EMD F9s and an Alco RS11 bring a loaded taconite train out of 1,800-foot Cramer Tunnel. The tunnel, located halfway between the taconite pellet plant at Hoyt Lakes and the company ore dock at Taconite Harbor on Lake Superior, is the longest rail tunnel in Minnesota. The 74-mile railroad was built in 1954 and ceased operation in 2008. The lead F-unit, No. 4211, is preserved at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minn. Carl Swanson
