
WASHINGTON — U.S. rail traffic was once again up in the week ending July 12, the Association of American Railroads reports.
AAR statistics show volume of 496,188 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.6% compared to the same week a year ago. That included 223,968 carloads, up 4.1%, and 272,220 containers and trailers, up 1.4%.
After 28 weeks, 2025 volume is 13,627,921 carloads and intermodal units, a gain of 3.9% from the same period last year. The 6,133,836 carloads represent an increase of 2.6% from a year ago, while the 7,494,085 intermodal units are a gain of 5%.
North American volume for the week, as reported by nine U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, was 685,617 carloads and intermodal units, a gain of 4%. The total includes 328,0987 carloads, an increase of 4.7% over the corresponding week in 2024, and 357,519 intermodal units, a gain of 3.3%.
For the year to date, North American traffic totaled 18,856,199 carloads and intermodal units, a 2.9% gain over the first 28 weeks of 2024. Canada’s total, 4,556,986 carloads and intermodal units, is an increase of 1.3%, while in Mexico, the 671,292 carloads and intermodal units through 28 weeks is a decrease of 6.5%.
