Georgia State Railroad Museum logoPart of the multi-site Coastal Heritage Society Museum complex, the Georgia State Railroad Museum is a destination for those interested in early American railroading technology. Located on the edge of Savannah’s renowned historic district, the museum encompasses 13 structures from the original Central of Georgia shops site, several of which date back to the early 1850s.

Choices

The 1926 roundhouse contains a collection of Georgia steam locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars, including the 1886 0-6-0 shop switcher No. 8 and a rare 1878 wooden business car. A self-guided tour provides information about the history and technology of the site. The operating turntable in the roundhouse is a must-see. Every month, the museum offers train rides powered by a diesel or steam locomotive. April through July offers the most opportunities with rides offered five days a week.

When to go

The museum is open year-round. Savannah’s near-tropical climate offers a welcome relief from the northern cold throughout the winter months.

Good to know

Georgia State Railroad Museum is built on the site of the Battle of Savannah, which was fought in 1779. It is the largest pre-Civil War era railroad complex of its size still operating.

Worth doing

The Savannah Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, is one of America’s premier urban historic neighborhoods. You’ll find fine examples of buildings in Georgian, Greek Revival, and Gothic styles.

Don’t miss

Expand your tour with a visit to the other sites in the complex. The Savannah History Museum is housed in the 1850s Central of Georgia passenger station and train shed one block north of the roundhouse. Old Fort Jackson, a brick fort built before the War of 1812, presents cannon-firing demonstrations. Battlefield Park commemorates a Revolutionary War battle fought in Savannah.

Getting there

Amtrak’s station is 3 miles away. By car, Highways 16 and 17 lead to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, which takes you to the museum.
