WICHITA, Kan. — The Great Plains Transportation Museum has reached its goal of raising an additional $50,000 for the restoration of Santa Fe FP45 No. 93, the museum announced today (Feb. 23).
The museum launched a GoFundMe effort in November to raise the funds, needed to address hidden rust and other damage discovered during preparation for cosmetic restoration [see “GoFundMe effort seeks to complete …,” Trains.com, Nov. 24, 2025].
“While the GoFundMe effort raised several thousand dollars, the majority of the $50,000 we needed was donated, or is committed, directly to our museum by generous supporters who learned of our need via publicity generated from our announcement,” museum President Heather Gatton said in a press release. “Every donation to our Santa Fe 93 cosmetic restoration project is important, and we appreciate the incredible support we received from so many people who want to see 93 in gleaming new red and silver paint.”
Work on the locomotive continues at Mid-America Car in Kansas City, Mo., with completion projected for spring or early summer. The FP45 was built by EMD and delivered to Santa Fe in December 1967 for passenger service; it moved into freight operations with the launch of Amtrak in May 1971. Last painted in 1990, the locomotive was retired in 1999 and donated to the museum in June 1999.
Donations to the project are still being accepted at its GoFundMe page.
