HARTFORD, Wis. — Soo Line No. 1003 will make its 2025 debut while also marking the 75th anniversary of the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. A partnership between the chapter and the Steam Locomotive Heritage Association — the non-profit organization that maintains and operates the locomotive — calls for the 1913-built Mikado to operate a non-passenger run on Aug. 23.
No. 1003 is scheduled to depart from its home at the Wisconsin Auto Museum in Hartford about 7:30 a.m., and travel the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad to Burnett, Wis., according to the Aug. 3 announcement. The itinerary will include a scheduled layover to coal the locomotive in Burnett at around 10:30 a.m., before heading back to Hartford. Association President Mike Raia confirms that the consist will include the group’s two cabooses, flatcar, and refrigerated boxcar/tool car. No. 1003 will also be facing eastbound only for the day’s activities (Burnett to Hartford).
The Wisconsin Chapter NRHS is providing financial support for the trip to take place. While no ticketed rides are being offered, both the chapter and association are welcoming the public to watch the train for free from trackside locations along the route. “Witnessing the power and elegance of this 112-year-old steam locomotive in action is a testament to Wisconsin’s railway heritage,” says the organizers in the joint announcement. However, safety remains paramount; spectators are reminded to maintain a safe distance from the tracks and respect private railroad properties.
No. 1003 is also scheduled to operate in late October for a private photo charter, organized by A-Train4014 Productions, in addition to the annual Hartford Santa Train on Nov. 8.
