CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Big Boy No. 4014’s 2025 season isn’t over yet! The Union Pacific Railroad announced to Steam Club members (Sept. 18) that the 4-8-8-4 will make another overnight visit to Denver in late September-early October.
The locomotive is scheduled to travel from Cheyenne (11:00 a.m. departure) to Denver on Sept. 30, and return the following day — an operational move to turn the locomotive in Speer, Wyo., will be made before arriving back into Cheyenne at 5 p.m. Two public stops are currently planned for servicing, according to the railroad: Greeley, Colo., Sept. 30 from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.; and Eaton, Colo., Oct. 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. UP adds that no public access in Denver will be available due to security and safety concerns.
No. 4014 made a late-July visit to Denver with the railroad’s diesel No. 1616, honoring Abraham Lincoln, in tow. The UP steam program website states that while this year’s schedule is limited, “the Big Boy will return to the rails in a big way in 2026 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.”
