WESTERNPORT, Md. — The Georges Creek Division Railroad took a devastating hit by Tuesday’s severe flooding to the western Maryland area. The short line, which ceased operations in 2019, was recently leased to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad for passenger and potential freight opportunities [See “Western Maryland Scenic to expand through lease…,” Trains News Wire, Jan. 15, 2024]
A May 14 posting on the Georges Creek Division’s Facebook page says the recently cleared right-of-way between Barton and Westernport suffered significant track damage by Tuesday evening. Bridges, crossings, additional right-of-way, and several miles of track were also impacted, according to the post. “Despite the setback, GCK remains committed to revitalizing the valley through passenger service, recreational access, and freight operations as opportunities arise.
“The flood didn’t end the dream — it only raised the stakes. We will share updates on the physical impact to the railroad and our future plans.”
Back on the Western Maryland Scenic, the Cumberland-Frostburg main line “didn’t receive the same level of damage,” according to the tourist railroad in a May 14 Facebook post. All upcoming excursions remain on schedule to operate, including this weekend’s trips with steam locomotive No. 1309.
CSX Transportation also sustained significant flood damage in the area [see “Flooding knocks out key CSX routes …,” News Wire, May 14, 2025].
