MASON CITY, Iowa. – Union Pacific is spending $31.5 million to upgrade the former Rock Island “Spine Line” between Nevada and Mason City. The project began April 24 and is scheduled for completion in mid-July.
The railroad will replace more than 57 miles of rail, repair the surfaces at 67 crossings, and replace 16 switches.
UP plans to spend more than $109 million in 2015 to improve its Iowa lines. The railroad will spend $105 million to maintain track, $1.5 million to on signal systems and $2.8 million to maintain or replace bridges in the state.
Union Pacific plans to spend $4.2 billion across its network this year for capital improvements.
