RIEDLINGEN, Germany — Two train crew members and one passenger died in a derailment near Stuttgart on Sunday, an incident police say was caused by an overflowing sewage line following heavy rains.

The overflow led to a mudslide along the tracks, the BBC reports. The derailment occurred about 6:10 p.m.; about 100 people were on board. Killed were the train’s 32-year-old driver and a 36-year old trainee, both male, and a 70-year female passenger, according to German broadcaster DW. Another 41 were injured, many seriously.

Photos on the DW website show overturned coaches, as well as the cab ripped off on unit of the diesel multiple unit trainset.

The area reported up to 50 liters per square meter (about 2 inches) of rain in an hour immediately beforehand.

German Chancellor Freidrich Merz offered his “deepest sympathy” to the family of the victims. National rail operator Deutsche Bahn also offered condolences and said it was cooperating fully with investigators.
