Seattle’s Sound Transit recently opened a 3.4-mile extension of the 2 Line to downtown Redmond, Wash. The extension includes two new stations, at Marymoor and downtown Redmond, as well as 1,400 new parking spaces at Marymoor Village.
Voters approved funding for the extension in 2016 as part of the Sound Transit 3 ballot measure. The Redmond project is the first of the ST3 projects to open.
“This expansion of the 2 Line into downtown Redmond and Marymoor Village is a game-changer, linking the connecting Eastside communities and giving residents more options to get around,” said Rep. Suzan DelBene in a prepared statement. “Investments like this are not just about improving transportation — they’re about fostering growth, creating opportunities, and strengthening the fabric of our neighborhoods.”
The latest extension marks Sound Transit’s fourth new line opening in the past year and a half. The agency launched service on the Lynwood Link extension last August; the 2 Line between South Bellevue and Redmond Technology Station in April 2024; and the T Line to Hilltop in September 2023. Two more line openings are planned within the next year, with the completion of the 2 Line and the start of the 1 Line service to Federal Way.
With the opening of the downtown Redmond link, Sound Transit now operates 46 miles of light rail across the Seattle region, according to a press release.
