LOS ANGELES — Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner is adding an additional round trip serving San Diego staring on Monday, June 16, while also making additional schedule adjustments.

The Los Angeles-San Diego service will now have 12 daily round trips.

New will be southbound train No. 584, departing Los Angeles at 4:10 p.m. and arriving in San Diego at 7:04 p.m., and northbound train No. 779, departing San Diego at 1:01 p.m., arriving in Los Angeles at 3:57 p.m., and continuing to San Luis Obispo, where it arrives at 9:56 p.m.

“This service expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to increase passenger rail access across Southern California,” Jason Jewell, managing director of the LOSSAN Agency, which oversees the Surfliner service, said in a press release. “The additional frequencies offer greater travel flexibility while supporting a convenient, reliable transportation option.”

Along with these changes, northbound train No. 777, which was a San Diego-San Luis Obispo train, will now become train No. 577, departing San Diego at 12:01 p.m. and terminating in Los Angeles at 2:57 p.m. There are also minor changes to connecting Thruway bus service to reflect these changes. The updated schedule is available here.

  1. That’s like comparing apples and mayonnaise.

They are both food, but serve completely different purposes. Maybe you should stick to Wisconsin. It’s hilarious that you think YOU know something secret that other people do not.

News flash. You don’t. You’re just regurgitating right wing propaganda.

  2. Yet another valid reason to visit adorable San Diego while surfing the rails…

  3. Train No. 584 is not exactly new, as I was riding that train almost daily in 2013 and 2014.

I agree with Charles that money spent on the LOSSAN service provides more benefit than the money spent on CAHSR.

  4. If I recall (after half a century), Amtrak started with three round trips LA – San Diego. Now there will be twelve. That plus commuter trains in the corridor which did not then exist. Ditto other mid-distance California corridors such as service to Sacramento.

That’s REAL ACTUAL SUCCESSFUL train service. As opposed to CalHSR, which is a scandal which should end the careers of every decision maker or manager involved. Starting with the horrible governor.

Here in Wisconsin, construction projects are delivered on time, on budget. CalHSR has spent billions over budget, years over schedule, without even starting the difficult and important segments at the north and the south ends.

I read the conservative, right-wing web sites in which the columnists criticize CalHSR and the governor. My response is, they don’t know the half of how bad this project is.

    1. We are all well aware that you read the right-wing stuff. You show us every day.

    2. CaHSR was started long before the “horrible governor” was in office 😀
In Wisconsin your state spends millions and gets no trains 😀
