Ontario requirement ends Saturday; Quebec sets date of June 18

MONTREAL — Ontario and Quebec announced plans on Wednesday to lift their mask requirements on public transit later this month.

The CBC reports Ontario will lift most mask requirements on Saturday, including those in hospitals, provincial chief medical officer Dr. Kieran Moore said. They will still be required in long-term care and retirement homes, and are recommended in higher-risk group living situations, such as shelters.

The Toronto Transit Commission said it will continue to strongly recommend that riders wear masks. They will remain required for riders and employees of Wheel-Trans, the TTC service for those with disabilities.

The Montreal Gazette reports Quebec’s mask requirement on public transit will end June 18, per a Wednesday announcement from provincial health minister Christian Dubé.

Dubé said the decision reflecting recommendation by public health officials is a sign of continuing improvement in the COVID-19 situation, and that the decision to wear a mask “will remain a personal choice.”

Masks will continue to be required in hospitals and other medical facilities.
