WASHINGTON — An R.J. Corman Railway Gorup conductor suffered a serious injury to his left foot when he was pinned between couplers on two railcars, the National Transportation Safety Board said in its preliminary report on an accident that occurred during switching in Guthrie, Ky., on June 26, 2025.
The accident occurred about 5 p.m. when the conductor and an engineer — who began their shift at 6:30 a.m. — were working to separate a bad-order car from a block of 13 cars. As the bad-order car was being placed onto a siding and was about to couple to two standing railcars, the conductor saw the knuckle of the standing car was misaligned. He used his left foot to attempt to realign the knuckle, and it was crushed between the couplers of the standing and bad-order cars. The conductor immediately radioed for assistance; emergency responders transported the conductor to a Nashville hospital, where he was released after several days.
The ongoing NTSB investigation will focus on R.J. Corman training, internal oversight, federal oversight, and other accidents near the end of a work shift.
Evidently wasn’t taught the USE YOUR HEAD method of alignment.
Why would you do that?????
