STAUNTON, Va. — Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611 is poised to return to the Buckingham Branch Railroad this fall. Beginning on Sept. 26, 2025, the 4-8-4 will lead the Virginia Scenic Railway’s Shenandoah Valley Limited for five weekends. The locomotive operated these trips in 2023, but sat out for 2024 due to essential firebox repairs [see “Norfolk & Western No. 611 to celebrate 75th birthday” News Wire, May 15, 2025].

Steve Powell, President of the Buckingham Branch Railroad, expressed excitement stating in a press release sent to News Wire: “The return of the N&W 611 is sure to bring joy to all who see and ride it.”

The excursions will begin and end at the custom-built Victoria Station in Goshen, Va. Passengers will then journey through the Shenandoah Valley’s picturesque landscapes. In a collaborative effort by the Virginia Scenic Railway, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, the Steam Railroading Institute and the Virginia Mechanical Preservation Society, seating options aboard the train will include Coach, Premium Coach, Table Class, and Dome Class, catering to a variety of preferences.

Details regarding schedules, pricing and ticket availability will be released later this summer, with updates available through the Virginia Scenic Railway website and newsletter.
