Norfolk Southern logoATLANTA — Norfolk Southern has received two awards for its achievements in sustainability, the company announced Thursday.

NS was recognized with the Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Award for locomotive fuel efficiency from the American Chemistry Council and the 2022 Green Bond of the Year Award from Environmental Finance.

The Chemistry Council award recognizes efforts including increased use of alternative fuels, retirement of less fuel-efficient locomotives, and use of locomotive energy management systems. These led to a 7% reduction in fuel usage, saving approximately 47 million gallons of fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 470,000 metric tons over two years.

The Environmental Finance award reflects NS’ issuance of $500 million in green bonds, the first such issuance by a North American Class I railroad. The bonds fund improvements to help the company reach its science-based emission reduction targets, as well as reduce supply-chain emissions for customers. The bond funded improvements in locomotive fuel efficiency and investments in intermodal terminals to shift freight movement from trucks to trains.
