NJ Transit logoNEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit is beginning the process of building a new rail maintenance-of-way equipment facility in Clifton, N.J., preparing a Request for Qualifications this month, pending approval from the state comptroller’s office.

The Request for Qualifications for Special Prequalification will be the initial step in a two-phase procurement process to select a team for design, construction, and commissioning of the Northern Rail Maintenance-of-Way Facility. That project will replace the current aging, flood-prone Wood-Ridge facility, providing a modern location for maintenance, servicing, and repair of vehicles. NJ Transit received a $75 million Federal Transit Administration grant for the facility last year.

“This project is a key step in delivering the infrastructure we need to support reliable and efficient transit operations across the state,” NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri said in a press release. “We look forward to partnering with experienced teams who share our commitment to innovation and excellence.”

The project includes demolition of an existing building at 99 Kuller Road in Clifton; construction of three new buildings on two NJ Transit-owned lots; and a new access road and parking lot. The prequalification process will result in shortlisting the most qualified firms to advance to the next phase of the process.
