ARVADA, Colo. — Amtrak’s first Airo trainset — a diesel-powered version destined for use in Amtrak Cascades Service — arrived in Colorado on Wednesday, July 23, en route to an extended stay for testing in Pueblo, Colo. P42 No. 22 was in charge special train No. 964, ferrying the new equipment from Siemens Mobility’s Sacramento plant. Amtrak is slated to receive 83 of the semi-permanently coupled trainsets, many of which will feature dual-mode power for use in the Northeast. Earlier this week, the Washington State Department of Transportation provided first-look images of the equipment and Amtrak released images of the train preparing for departure [see “News Photos: Amtrak’s first Airo train …,” Trains News Wire, July 23, 2025].
Seen this live on Virtual Railfan. I can’t believe a train like this will soon be taking passengers all over the Pacific Northwest. Good luck with testing and see you on Pacific Northwest rails in 2026.
