GRANITE CITY, Ill. — Port Harbor Railroad SW1200 No. 9335 sits gleaming in fresh paint — a scheme reminiscent of its former Conrail livery — at America’s Central Port in Granite City on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The switcher was built by EMD in November 1957 for the Pennsylvania Railroad, went to Penn Central in 1968 and to Conrail in 1976. Retired by that railroad in 1995, it was sold to Cargill in East St. Louis, Ill., then purchased by Port Harbor in 2018 when Cargill contracted its switch to Port Harbor. The locomotive was stored until 2022 when it was moved to Quality Rail in Madison, Ill., where it received an upgrade to its cab, with a new control stand and flooring, as well as fresh paint. The locomotive arrived at the port on Jan. 10 via the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis and will be placed in service shortly.
