NEW YORK — A subway rider died early Thursday after being caught between a train and station platform, falling onto the tracks, according to New York’s transit agency — a description which contradicted initial reports that he had been dragged to his death after being caught in a train doorway.
The New York Times reports the accident occurred late Wednesday and involved a Q Train at Avenue M in Brooklyn; the victim, Marcus Bryant, 37, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
The description of events from Richard Davey, president of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s New York City Transit, was in contrast to an initial report from police that Bryant’s clothes had been caught in a door. But the Times reports the police said they would defer to the MTA’s investigation.
The MTA said there were security cameras in operation at the station but declined to release footage, citing its ongoing investigation. Davey; MTA Chief Safety and Security Officer Patrick Warren; NYC Transit Senior Vice President of Subways Demetrius Crichlow; and Carl Hamann, chief of the NYC Transit Office of System Safety, visited the accident scene Thursday as part of the investigation.
