The MxV Rail laboratory in Pueblo, Colo., is now equipped with a bearing rig tester. MxV Rail

PUEBLO, Colo. — MxV Rail is expanding its laboratory capabilities for rail component testing.

The facility now has new machines and test capabilities available, with more laboratory test services rolling out soon, in order to promote safety advancements in the rail industry, MxV Rail said today.

New capabilities include a bearing rig tester with a servo-hydraulic computer-controlled load frame and a unique water spray feature. In addition, a custom-designed tie wear tester was launched, and its first commercial test was recently completed.

Another capability serving the rail industry’s testing needs is the environmental chamber, recently donated to MxV Rail by a railroad that is a member of the Association of American Railroads. (MxV Rail is an AAR subsidiary.) This installation allows components to be tested in controlled environment conditions ranging from -85 to +185 degrees Fahrenheit, mimicking the deserts of Arizona and a Canadian winter.

“Our mission has always been to support our rail industry partners in testing new technologies, solving complex problems, and bringing solutions into service so that we advance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of rail together,” Jason Reiling, MxV Rail senior assistant vice president of business development, said in a statement. “With the new equipment in place, our incredibly talented lab teams are providing the industry with the insights and data needed to lead the industry into the future. We’re proud to bring these new capabilities to life in our modern 70,000-square-foot testing and research facility.”

All the equipment has been selected, designed, and installed in response to research needs articulated by MxV Rail’s Class I sponsors and other collaborators across the rail community.

Looking ahead, more tools and test capabilities will be available this year, including a knuckle fatigue tester, a custom-designed 660,000-pound load frame, and the truck warp stiffness testing fixture.

  1. MxV ????? These fake names for companies always reminds one that something is being hidden from the public view.

    1. In March 2022, the AAR announced that TTCI would be rebranded into MxV Rail, a name based on the mathematical formula for momentum: mass x velocity

    2. In other words, someone didn’t know how to leave well enough alone.
