STOCKTON, Calif. — Stacey Mortensen, executive director of the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission, will step down from her position on Aug. 31 after 27 years, the commission has announced.
The commission oversees the Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail operation and manages the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority, which oversees Amtrak’s San Joaquins service.
“I know this transition comes at a pivotal moment in the agency’s history, as we are preparing to deliver a multi-billion-dollar portfolio of transformative transportation projects across the region,” Mortensen said in a statement. “Recognizing the scale and complexity of what lies ahead, I’ve recommended to the Boards that the next phase of leadership should bring experience in large-scale capital program execution. I will remain actively engaged in supporting the recruitment process and ensuring a smooth and thoughtful transition.”
The commission is overseeing or involved in projects including Valley Rail, which would expand the routes of ACE and the San Joaquins, and the Stockton Diamond project to build a flyover separating the BNSF and Union Pacific main lines;
The commission initiated the process of seeking a successor at a special meeting on April 22.
“In the months ahead, I will continue to work closely with both boards and staff to transfer institutional knowledge and help position the agency for continued excellence,” Mortensen said in her statement. “I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me over the years and proud of all we’ve accomplished together. “
