NEW YORK — The Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad announced this week that they will reintroduce a “Summer Saturday” discount travel program this Saturday (July 5, 2025).
The program, good on Saturdays through Aug. 30, allows monthly ticket holders to bring up to two additional travelers along for just $1 per person each way. The $1 tickets can be purchased on the MTA’s Train Time smartphone app, under the Family Fares heading, or on board without an additional charge.
“We’ve made it a priority to get creative on fares and give customers the best bang for their buck — no matter where they want to go, from Montauk to Manitou,” MTA CEO Janno Lieber said in a press release.
There is no cross-honoring in the discount program, meaning LIRR monthly pass ticket holders cannot use the pass on Metro-North, and vise versa. Five LIRR trains are exempt from program: the 7:13 a.m., 8:14 a.m., and 10:29 a.m. trains from Jamaica to Montauk, and the 7:47 a.m. train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma and its onward connection, the 9:14 a.m. from Ronkonkoma to Greenport.
The “Summer Saturday” deal was previously offered in 2021.
Well done! This timely initiative definitely reflects MTA’s broader strategy to attract more riders and strengthen public transport’s role in summer tourism.
