WASHINGTON — The Federal Transit Administration will provide $1.75 billion to fund accessibility improvements at U.S. transit systems, using money from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the agency announced today, with $343 million to be offered through a new notice of funding availability.
The All Stations Accessibility Program will retrofit subway stations to provide elevators or ramps for those who need them. The announcement came on the 32nd anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“While our country has made enormous progress in the three decades since passing the Americans with Disabilities Act, too many people with disabilities still don’t have access to reliable public transportation,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a press release. “Using funds from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are modernizing some of our oldest public rail stations and ensuring that more Americans count on our transit systems to get where they need to go.”
Information on eligibility for the grants and instructions for applying can be found on the FTA website.
