OTTAWA, Ontario — Prime Minister Mark Carney has reshuffled Canada’s cabinet following the Liberal Party’s victory in the April 28 national election — but the transport minister position is one of the few unchanged.
Chrystia Freeland — who was Carney’s primary rival to lead the Liberals in party elections in — remains in the transportation position to which she was named in March [see “Freeland, former deputy prime minister …,” Trains News Wire, March 14, 2025]. She also added the job of minister of internal trade as the new cabinet was sworn in today (Tuesday, May 13). She is just one of five ministers retaining their previous positions, although some of those jobs have been at least slightly redefined.
In all, Carney reduced the number of cabinet positions from 39 to 28, plus 10 secretaries of state, who are not full cabinet members but are assigned specific responsibilities. Notable among the shuffling: Anita Anand, who had been transport minister before Freeland, is now foreign affairs minister. More details and the full list of cabinet members is available in this CBC report.
