WASHINGTON — Amtrak service in the Northeast Corridor has been disrupted this morning (June 23, 2025) by a track closure between Philadelphia and Washington attributed to “disabled equipment from one of our rail partners,” according to the Amtrak Northeast social media feed.
The passenger operator has also announced at least one heat restriction in the Northeast that will lead to delays.
The closure was caused by a Norfolk Southern derailment involving one locomotive and three empty railcars that occurred at 12:05 a.m. An email from a Norfolk Southern spokesman reported no injuries occurred and that all cars have now been rerailed.
Service was restored by 8:30 a.m. ET, but has led to numerous train cancellations:
— Northeast Regional train No. 66 between Roanoke and New York;
— Northeast Regionals Nos. 111 and 181 between Philadelphia and Washington, and Nos. 130 and 170 between Washington and Philadelphia;
— Acela No. 2152 between Washington and Philadelphia, and Nos. 2150 and 2154 between Washington and New York;
— Acela No. 2107 and Northeast Regional No. 151 in their entirety.
Amtrak has also announced that trains between Rhinecliff and Schenectady, N.Y., on the Empire Service route may be subject to delays because of heat restrictions between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. today. Other restrictions are likely as the day proceeds; the Northeast Corridor faced delays of up to 20 minutes on Sunday.
— Updated at 9:22 a.m. CT with details from Norfolk Southern on derailment.
It seems there should have been no excuse for canceling Train 66. They could have run it to DC and then back from there this afternoon.
