The fire department responded to a call at approximately 12:45 a.m. of a derailment in the Unity Village area between Rhinehart Road and Northwest Colbern Road and found the train’s locomotives and an estimated 12 to 20 cars of the 144-car train derailed in a heavily wooded area. No fire occurred and no hazardous materials were released, according to information reported to the Lee’s Summit Tribune.

Lee’s Summit is a suburb southeast of Kansas City. The derailment has led to cancellation of today’s Missouri River Runner service between St. Louis and Kansas City; the Missouri River Runner/Lincoln Service trains offering through Chicago-St. Louis-Kansas City service will originate or terminate in St. Louis, according to the Amtrak Alerts feed on X.
