MILLBRAE, Calif. — Commuter rail operator Caltrain will relocate its headquarters to Millbrae, near a station served by both Caltrain and Bay Area Rapid Transit, the agency announced Thursday, Dec. 5.

Caltrain currently shares headquarters space in San Carlos, Calif., with SamTrans, the San Mateo County Transit District, which  announced in March that it would vacate that facility. The two agencies will continue to be paired at the new site, the Gateway at Millbrae Station development. SamTrans acquired the 180,000-square-foot building there in December 2023; Caltrain will occupy about 26,500 square feet on the fourth floor.

“Our new headquarters will provide the modern facilities and convenient location our team needs, with seamless access to the Millbrae Transit Station and the entire Caltrain corridor,” Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard said in a press release. “After a thorough evaluation of several options, we believe this is the best choice for Caltrain.”

Caltrain has agreed to a 10-year lease with two five-year options to extend the agreement. The lease will begin when SamTrans begins occupying the new space.
