Army-Navy game train ‘Liberty Limited’ returns to the rails NEWSWIRE

WASHINGTON — Wounded veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars rode a classic passenger train to the Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia Saturday. The “Liberty Limited” operated this year following a year off owing to a death in the family of the train’s hosts [see “News Wire,” Dec. 9, 2009].

The train transports the vets from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington and Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md., to the game. The train first operated in 2005.

Restored Pennsylvania Railroad E8s 5711 and 5809 pulled the train. The engines are owned by the train’s hosts, Bennett and Vivian Levin. Private cars on the train included Caritas, Southern No. 1, C&O No. 33 Chapel Hill, Dover Harbor, Northern Dreams, J. Pinckney Henderson, Golden Tower, Golden Moon, Imperial Leaf, Birken, Silver Shore, Silver Express, Oliver Hazard Perry, Greenwich Harbor, Greenwich Estate, Mount Vernon, Kitchie Gammi Club, Pony Express, and Pennsylvania 120.

The Navy won the game 31-17.
