SASKATOON, Saskatchewan — The City of Saskatoon is proposing that Canadian Pacific and Canadian National share CN’s line south of the city, which would take CP traffic out of downtown.
City director of transportation Jay Magus told the city council earlier this week that both railroads have been approached about the proposal, the Saskatoon Star Phoenix reports, and is awaiting a response: “We are working with the rail companies to receive an indication of their interest or … lack of interest.”
The city worked with consultants to prepare a proposal on the line sharing. A study by consultant HDR Corp. set the cost of relocating the CP line at C$589.7 million, plus $374.4 million for building overpasses or underpasses at nine locations.
The city worked with CN to relocate its lines out of downtown Saskatoon in the 1960s, a project completed in October 1964.
