Trains.com exclusive video series host Steve Brown gets to work on the trackwork of his down-sized (N scale) depiction of the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway. True to form, Steve follows his “Regular Guy” routine, and finds that some unexpected complications are cause for contemplation…and deviation from the original Model Railroader magazine HO scale track plan!

  1. Am I the only one who had trouble hearing/understanding the audio? The sound was muffled and basically unintelligible. I don’t usually have these problems, so I think it was the recording.

  2. Very nice job of adapting the Tar Branch concepts and track to your longer, narrow space. You have adroitly captured the essence and flavor of that switching gem. Did the track components you used have code 80 rail? Given the era, I might have used code 55 instead.
The only jarring note to my eye was during the switching test. Loco movement was not that smooth – a bit jerky in spots. Track not as clean as it could be? I expect that this effect will improve with time.
As always, look forward to the next chapter.

  3. Interesting. I tried the similar downsizing using CadRail design software. Once I got past the steep learning curve (and it is steep!), I found the process enjoyable and apricated the exactness of dimensioning with the freedom of moving track and scenic assemblies into “what if’s”. I may be enjoying this phase too much, I have yet to lay track!

  4. Loved the video. Gave me inspiration to try scaling down a track plan I’ve had my eye on. Keep up the great work!

  5. Great video Steve! I tried this by scaling the print of a HO scale layout PDF, and not to the success that you met with here. Champion results! And you’re right about just “shoving off.”
