Many of us have hobbies within this hobby. Some like history, some collect freight cars or locomotives. Me? I read old issues of Model Railroader. In the past 15 years I’ve gone through my entire 50-year collection four times. Because my tastes and interests evolve over time, I inevitably find something new with each re-reading. In fact my database of flagged articles and drawings numbers well into the 300s. So when I needed an industry for a spur on the outskirts of the town of Westcott on my Bona Vista RR, I opened the database.
I turned up a dozen good choices, but the one that really appealed to me was the structure shown in “Build the Bartlett Building Materials Warehouse,” a set of drawings and photos by Elmer Cerny published in the September 1970 issue. The building was fairly tall, but not overbearing, and had classic lines and a recessed loading dock. Although I couldn’t build the structure exactly as the article depicted, I could pick up those distinctive features to develop a freelanced structure that would fit into the 5″ x 9″ space I had available.
