LECLAIRE, Iowa – Canadian Pacific has reopened its main line to Kansas City, Mo., following a derailment in LeClaire. However, cleanup at the scene is ongoing Monday.
Spokesman Andy Cummings tells Trains News Wire that the railroad overnight on Jan. 3 after once all track repairs and safety inspections were complete.
“CP is talking directly with property owners affected by the derailment,” Cummings tells trains News Wire. “CP regrets the inconvenience to the LeClaire community and is working to restore the site.”
At about 11 a.m. on Jan. 3, a mixed freight train derailed 24 cars in LeClaire, according to Cummings. There were no injuries.
One car carrying nonylphenol leaked. CP was able to stop the leak and contain the spilled product while working with first responders. The railroad’s environmental personnel are remediating the soil in the immediate area in consultation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. There is no evidence that any spilled product reached waterways. No other railcars leaked.
One wonders if CP upgraded the old Milw. Rd. ROW, which saw little traffic.
