DURANGO, Colo. — Operation of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been suspended because of flooding caused by recent record rainfall, but is expected to resume “shortly,” the railroad said.

“We appreciate the understanding of guests who have been affected by service interruptions,” the D&SNG said in a Facebook post, “and plan to resume our normal schedule shortly.” The railroad website still shows tickets available for trains running as soon as Thursday, Oct. 16.

The Durango Herald reports that Southwestern Colorado has received 512% of the region’s regular October rainfall over a period of several days; Officials in La Plata County said on Monday that 390 home remained  evacuated in the Vallecito area north east of Durango, with at least two homes  declared a total loss and nearly 100 others having sustained damage, La Plata County officials said earlier this week. Wolf Creek Pass — the primary route between the southwestern part of the state and the major cities along the Front Range — was closed by flood damage as of Tuesday.
