UNION, Ill. — The Illinois Railway Museum has announced ambitious plans to restore its Union Pacific DDA40 “Centennial” No. 6930 to full operational status. The “Revive the Centennial” campaign was publicly unveiled on Sept. 17 via the museum’s social media channels.
This significant undertaking will involve extensive upgrades and repairs, including the crucial acquisition and installation of two replacement prime movers and eight new traction motors and wheelsets. Fortunately, the necessary prime movers have been generously donated by Progress Rail and are awaiting installation. Beyond the mechanical work, a complete cosmetic restoration is also planned to return No. 6930 to its original grandeur. Total project costs are yet to be released.
Built in 1969 to commemorate the centennial of the Transcontinental Railroad’s completion, No. 6930 is one of 47 DDA40s famously known as “Centennials.” These locomotives were celebrated as the most powerful diesel-electric locomotives ever constructed on a single frame. Each produced an impressive 6,600 horsepower from two 16-cylinder diesel engines and featured eight traction motors. These giants weighed 270 tons and stretched over 98 feet, specifically designed to haul freight over long distances at speeds up to 90 mph. During their active service, No. 6930 and its sisters logged approximately 2 million miles before their retirement in 1985.
No. 6930 has been a part of IRM’s collection since 1991. Volunteers previously restored it as an unpowered “cab car” in 2005. However, this new endeavor aims for full functionality. Upon the project’s completion, No. 6930 will join its sister, No. 6936, as only the second operational DDA40 in existence.
Visit the Illinois Railway Museum website for more information and to contribute to the project.
This is fantastic news!! Another operational Centennial would be absolutely awesome. Best wishes to IRM and I hope they’re able to secure the needed funds for the work. Big up to PRLX for donating replacement 645s too!
