CHAMA, N.M. — The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic will host a five-day celebration Aug. 13-17 marking the 100th anniversary of the Denver & Rio Grande Western’s K-36 steam locomotives, delivered from Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925. Nine of the 10 locomotives still exist; five are at the C&TSRR, with four still in regular operation.

A full schedule is here. While many of the ticketed events are sold out, the celebration will also feature a series of free public events. Those include:

— A birthday celebration Chama on Aug. 13 featuring cake and a ceremonial “Feeding of the Firebox.”

— A Parade of Steam and historic photo on Thursday, Aug. 14.

— Evening whistle salutes, Aug. 13-15

— Guided walking tours: Tours including rarely accessible areas of the historic Chama yard will be offered Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Although most special excursion and photo-charter trains are sold out, tickets remain available for CT&S daily scenic rides. For tickets, additional details, and lodging information, visit the Cumbres & Toltec website.
