BALTIMORE — The B&O Railroad Museum has launched a new website, AmericanRail200.org, intended as a one-stop source of information on the bicentennial of American railroading in 2027.
The site will serve as the central clearinghouse for events and news, with organizations and individuals invited to upload information so users can find information on events nationwide. Events can range from community celebrations to museum exhibitions to train-themed musical events and educational programming.
“The 200th anniversary of American railroading is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate an industry whose tracks form the DNA of American life,” Kris Hoellen, executive director of the B&O Railroad Museum, said in a press release. “Through americanrail200.org, everyone can participate in the bicentennial and plan their vacations by searching the website for events and activities to attend in 2027. We invite everyone to explore, connect, and contribute.”
Partners in the celebration include CSX Transportation, the Smithsonian Institution, Amtrak, the Baltimore Orioles, and others. Partners are committed to either hosting special events during 2027 or leveraging their visibility to promote the contributions of railroading in American life.
The Baltimore & Ohio because the first common-carrier railroad chartered in the U.S. on Feb. 28, 1827; the B&O Museum plans its first anniversary event on July 4, 2026, when it opens a time capsule placed in the first stone laid at the start of B&O construction in 1827.
Visit the website to explore its content, submit an event or news, or inquire about partnerships.
Let’s recall that the railroads took North America from an agricultural society into a manufacturing and economic powerhouse.
