GOWANDA, N.Y. — Montreal Locomotive Works M636 diesel No. 636 debuted May 17, 2025, in its new paint scheme for the New York & Lake Erie Railroad (NYLE). The 1970-built locomotive was acquired by the short line in 2024 from the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad.
Initially debuting on the railroad’s Santa Express excursions in November 2024, the subsequent off-season saw No. 636 receive the paint job that reflects the color scheme of the NYLE. A May 16 Facebook post from the railroad indicates the locomotive will operate on the 2025 South Dayton Flyer, between Gowanda and South Dayton. It will serve as a running mate to the widely known MLW FPA2u and FPA4 diesels used for excursion operations .

Great gain for the NYLE… Remember that the M-636 was an evolution of the ALCo C636, and it saw many sales to Canadian, Mexican and Australian customers.
