MOUNT WASHINGTON, N.H. — The iconic coal-fired steam locomotives of the Mount Washington Cog Railway will see a temporary delay in their 2025 debuts.

A May 12 post on the tourist railroad’s Facebook page states: “Recent pre-season preparations revealed the need for reduced steam pressure in locomotives MW2 and MW9, conditions that would result in significantly slower ascent times incompatible with on-time performance.” All excursions along the 6,288-foot-high Mount Washington are still scheduled to operate with the modern biodiesel locomotives.

Mount Washington Cog Railway hopes to have both steam locomotives back in service for the 2025 season. Comprehensive refurbishment to Nos. 2 and 9 is expected heading into 2026, as confirmed by the May 12 Facebook post.
